Richey Suncoast Theatre announces 2017-18 lineup

NEW PORT RICHEY — Richey Suncoast Theatre has announced its 2017-18 season of five shows, a change of style for the holiday special and an increase in the season ticket price, though tickets for individual shows will stay the same.

"We haven't had a (season ticket) price increase in years," said Marie Skelton, executive director of the theater. "With expenses going up like they are, we think it's about time we do."

Five shows will be $70 (up from $60), cash or check, $77 by credit card. Individual shows are still $18. Youth and group rates are available. Call (727) 842-6777.

The season includes two comedies and three musicals, one of them new to this area — Catch Me If You Can, the 2011 Broadway show based on the movie about the life of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr. Shows open on a Thursday, followed by three subsequent weekends. Curtain is at 8 p.m., except Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

The 2017-18 season includes:

• Sept. 7-24: Jekyll and Hyde, the 1997 musical horror-drama based on the Robert Louis Stevenson book about a cultured, respected doctor who experiments with drugs that he hopes will cure his father's mental problems, but instead turn the doctor himself into a sex-crazed monster.

• Oct. 19-Nov. 5: How the Other Half Loves, playwright Alan Ayckbourn's acclaimed sex comedy set in the swinging 1960s. In it, three couples play "musical beds," each suspicious of the other and totally misconstruing who is bedding whom.

• Jan. 11-28, 2018: I Hate Hamlet, the tale of an ambitious actor, Andrew Rally, who lives in the former apartment of the late acting legend John Barrymore — and the ghost of the selfsame Barrymore. Rally's girlfriend wants him to play Hamlet, but Rally may be more intrigued by the lucrative world of television.

• March 1-18, 2018: Catch Me If You Can, the tale of the FBI's dogged pursuit of a young high school dropout who impersonates an airline pilot, a doctor and a lawyer while becoming a skilled forger.

• May 10-27, 2018: The Addams Family, a musical comedy, based on the ghoulish cartoon characters created by Charles Addams: the preternaturally slender Morticia; her husband, Gomez; their sinister daughter, Wednesday, and masochistic son, Pugsley; creepy Uncle Fester, and towering butler Lurch. Wednesday falls in love with a normal fellow, Lucas Beineke, whose parents turn out to be as kooky in their own way as the Addams family is.

The theater's Christmas show will be announced at a later date, but is expected to be two shows by a professional performer and not available as a part of the season ticket package.
