Amber Heard sues comedian Doug Stanhope for defamation
Amber Heard’s legal team sure is keeping busy.
The actress and model is going on the offensive against Doug Stanhope, a close friend of Johnny Depp’s, after the comedian wrote a scathing column for TheWrap in which he accused Heard of blackmailing her estranged husband and lying about the actor’s alleged domestic abuse.
According to People, Heard claims in the court filing that Stanhope, “orchestrated a plot to write an article, which was published at TheWrap.com, which falsely accuses plaintiff Amber Heard of 'blackmail’ and other criminal behavior towards her husband, Johnny Depp, from whom she is seeking a divorce.”
Heard said the claims caused her “tremendous harm” and detailed more incidents of alleged abuse, including an incident in which she claims Depp “nearly suffocated her.”
Heard’s lawyer said in a statement that she plans to donate the “maximum possible jury award” to a domestic violence charity in Arizona, where Stanhope lives and where the lawsuit was filed.
In addition to detailing her claims of abuse, Heard accuses Depp and company — 20 John Does, to be exact — of going on a “publicity tour” in an attempt to discredit her claims.
“Depp and his representatives further 'went on the offensive’ during the publicity tour repeatedly making false public allegations about Heard to the press, accusing her of being manipulative, a blackmailer, and blaming her for the breakup of the marriage — as if Depp’s alcoholism, drug addiction and campaign of violence against his wife played no part.”
